Mid Ohio Major

Is there an available online tutorial on racing at MidOhio in the rain? Maybe school guide or other wet weather reference anyone would be willing to share?

None that I am aware of but I learned to stay off of the concrete and normal racing line in the corners as much as possible. Riding the outside dirty line gives better grip in the rain.

The concrete is long gone, since a complete re-pave several years ago. But now there's a new problem: sealer. Basically just keep off of it, or at the very least keep your outside tires (i.e. the loaded side) off of it. When you do have to cross it, expect there to be ZERO grip, and to be a passenger at that point. Just have faith that you'll maybe gain grip back again after you get done skating across it.

For those of you who are use to there being a Thursday evening Twilight Test & Tune prior to this event, hosted by the Mid-Ohio School, know that there isn't one this year. Oddly, it's scheduled for Friday night, at the conclusion of our qualifying day. I looked into it, and apparently it was a scheduling problem with the Mid-Ohio school, and someone else had already reserved the track on Thursday before the mistake was realized. So.....I guess if you feel you need more seat time or to check something out on your car, following qualifying on Friday, additional practice sessions will be available that night through the track.
Additional info stemming from this scheduling mishap with the Mid Ohio School: do not expect to be able to get into the track until after registration opens at 6pm. In years past, because it was only the Mid-Ohio School operating at the track the day prior to an SCCA event, we've been able to access the paddock throughout that day. But because there's a private club using the track that day this year, we're most likely not going to be allowed in until after registration opens at 6pm. That's pretty "standard operating procedure" at most other tracks/events, but I just wanted to let you guys to know, incase you're expecting otherwise.

My car is pretty close to ready for the weekend - looking forward to it!

Good to know but I predict a monumental jam up at registration and the track entrance if thats the case. Any way we can make certain of this information? This will impact a lot of folks travel plans.

i agree....the jam up will be huge...maybe we can get someone to work waivers for the track separate and then go back to registration to get the scca event. I guess I will try and show up around 7:30 :)

I emailed one of the Race Chairs and got this response. It sounds like anyone NOT wanting on the paved paddock can sign the track waiver, go get a spot and then come back to registration once its open and do the SCCA thing. Workers can get in by the same process. For those who want on the pavement....looks like you'll just have to wait. I don't know if that's different as I've never been a 'paddock on the pavement' guy.

"People/Workers can get in, but will have to return to go to registration when it opens, no different than any other weekend. Driver’s can pretty much do the same, they just can’t permanent paddock yet if wanting on cement. Some with big rigs, etc. will just have to wait on the blvd. Someone else is renting the track and Mid Ohio has a corporate school going on during Thursday so it is not ours until after 5p (ie cold track).

:applause: Thanks big D. email me with particulars when the day comes as to where everybody is or isn't as the case may be.

Bryan

If I'm standing around talking and drinking beer, while in the registration queue or in the paddock, it doesn't matter much to me. Since we don't have to be on track until 10:55am on Friday, I won't be in a hurry. 8)

What's the details on any live streaming? I assume data will be available on RaceMonitor. Anything else?

I heard Eric P. talk about more testing of live streaming video.

Just for clarification, all Majors events are supposed to have the T&S data streamed live. Melinda will be bringing a laptop to do this for the MidO event. As for other video streaming, I'm not in on that facet so I can't add (or subtract) on the subject.

Dayle

Yes, there will be some streaming. Stay tuned for an announcement Thursday. You can let your friends and family know that there will be links to any live information (video, audio, twitter, timing, etc) at the event home page at www.scca.com/midohiomajors

I'll be coming in Friday afternoon. See everyone this weekend!

I have 6 free 215-15 Hoosier radial slicks available at MidO. Tread left, FV'd and stored bagged but 3 years and a dozen heat cycles slow. They are very useable. I was going to run them but got some better take offs from one of the fast guys. Will arrive late this evening

Eric, after a live qualifying session is completed are the qualifying times quickly posted someplace?

The data is in the race monitor app. In addition, all Majors events have a home page on the SCCA site (click majors in the upper left corner, then pick 2014 events, then pick the specific event) where the results are posted by......wait for it.......clicking results.

Live streaming video and real time T&S are nice but the HP races this weekend demanded attendance. On Saturday, Greg Gauper and Matt Brannon dueled hammer and tong for the entire 30 minutes. If there wasn't a first lap wave off, the field would have run an entire 'normal' 19 lap national. As it was they did 18 laps and the MOV was 0.7s. An outstanding battle that was clean and close all the way with Greg capturing the top rung. On Sunday the roles reversed as Matt was dogged by Greg lap after lap. The margin would drift between 0.2 and 0.8s over and over again with Matt on the point. At about the half way point, Matt cracked off a pair of 1:44's and that put Greg 3s behind. He could not get closer and Matt ended up with a 7s MOV. Eric Vickerman captured third both days with Jason Stine, Aaron Johnson giving chase.

As for the EP races, Jim Daniels CRUSHED the field both days.

FP had Kevin Ruck win both ends and looked dominant over a strong field with Sam Henry, David Strittmater, Mason Workman, Curt Wood and others in tow.

GTL had a very strong field as well with Jamie Houseman, Kyle Disque, Kent Prather, Roy Lopshire, Chris Kopley, Bryan Floyd, Joel Hipp and Rob Bax. Kyle won both races too and looked pretty good in doing so as he was aided by a blessing from yours truly  . Jamie is to be commended as he hosted the GTL Invitational. They had special trophies (that looked waaaaay cool), a dinner saturday evening and a solid field. I wish the class all continued success.

On to RA for the June Sprints.

What a great weekend!

First off I have to thank Jason Stine for his help on tire pressures and a front hub seal that allowed me to race on Sunday. Congrats to both Greg and Matt on driving some good races and for the kind words they always had. Can't wait until the next meeting.

Thanks also goes to my wife and Dayle Frame for helping me with the car on grid and in the pits.

Any word about Kent? He looked pretty spent after the Sunday race, and was glad to see he didn't require a bus ride to infield medical center.

I think that was one of the most pleasant 3 days ever spent at Mid-Ohio, from the weather to the company, the competition, etc...

Thank you to all who came to enjoy our region's shin-dig.
