HP Runoffs thread

My coverage was dead during pre-race. Any word on why Bartell didn't start?

Craig

Jerry Olsen said Ron had a off in the kink and into the wall in Q3, I'm guessing that had something to do with it.

I heard Ron had some intermittent brake problem and decided it was too dangerous to try to run it.

Well thats better than crash damage. Dick, congrats on you all's silver medal :applause:

Posting on my BB from I80 EB thru Indiana so disclaimer for misspellings.

Anyone know why results were still provisional @3:30 ? We got our friend thru his first runoffs FV race then finished packing up and left w/out a final results sheet. Was paper thrown?

Joe C asked for opinions on new schedule: hated it! The paddock was clearing out as of Thursday and it felt like a wasteland as of yesterday. Open wheel guys never had their party cause schedule didn't work and some other groups passed on their traditions as well. Fair # of spectators Saturday and Sunday, but spectators don't come to watch qualifying - they come for racing. Kinda sucks for them. Hated it as a worker too: very confusing trying to keep qualifying and racing straight.

That was a fun race!
The draft train at the front was a hoot.
Chris had gearbox issues which allowed me to get a run on him out of 3. I was content to follow Chris early and we both worked the draft to keep up with the two Mike's but I had to bail on him when the leaders started to gap us.
Track conditions were ideal. I have never run in more perfect conditions.

Spoke with Ron before I left. He had a snap spin on Friday under braking going into turn 5 and lightly tagged the wall.
He used the last lap of Q3 on Saturday to try and trouble shoot his brake issue and was doing a brake test on the back side of the track when it snap-spun again and hit the wall betwwen the Kink and turn 12.
The car was fixable but without knowing the root cause of the problem he elected to park it.
Too bad...based on how he ran at Mid-Ohio this summer I really expected him to be up there in our lead group.

Here is my in-car video.

Well it wasn't a fun race for me. I had no place to go and really whacked Jack Shultz. My incar shows he was spun by Hannagan and Broring juuuuust missed him. How Tom missed him, I have no idea. Very quick reactions. But Jack was sitting there and I had no place to go. My car is fixable but there's a helluva lot of man hours in front of me. I'm sure the same is true for Jack. Shitty end to a shitty week. Two sessions black flagged and I get meatballed for a little tire rub.....oh well. I was looking forward to a fun race with Tom, Andrew, Bob, etc. I had shaved 3s off my best time there and was thinking I could have a good day.

As soon as I get home and can snip out a piece of the video, I'll post a YouTube link for all to see.

One thing that PISSED me off was the post incident treatment. I was fine but was told I had to go to medical. OK, but can we stop at the pits so we can pick up my wife? She has NO idea of my condition. The PA content made it sound like I took a huge hit. But NO, we can't go to get her. It took 20 minutes for her to get to me. I asked repeatedly for someone to call to the pit workers and pass along info....but they wouldn't do it. And that's crap. I WILL be talking to my director about this. HIPPA is one thing.....but not being able to contact my wife about this is wrong. She was falling apart when she finally got to medical. It was all handled very badly.

All that being said, the medical staff were great. I was examined by them pretty quickly. It was kind of funny...a guy came in all bundled up (it was pretty cold this morning) and started asking questions. He didn't introduce himself or anything. I asked "can I assume your medical personnel?". I'm not answering those questions to just anyone. But, yes, he was the doctor on staff and it all was kosher.

Well get her put back together and be out next summer. I was hoping to get to VIR in April but that looks unlikely.

Dayle

Sorry to see your crash Dayle. I was watching and as soon as I saw you sitting, I immediately cursed at the computer. Glad you're ok.

The wife business is terrible. Does she have a scanner? At least that way she could know the severity of the incident. i know that doesn't help the ridiculousness of the situation though.

Congrats to everyone on a fun race to watch.

It was a successful runoffs for us this season. This one started off with some "iffy" weather but Sunday's race had really excellent conditions. Mike couldn't get a clean qualifying session for anything. Those first 2 qualifiers with their Black Flag All situations had him back at 10th, then 6th. The alternator quit charging and we had to do Saturday with no charging. Luckily, Mike pulled a 2:43 out of his butt for 3rd, but the car wouldn't go the distance without an Alt. Huge thanks to Chris Albin & crew for loaning us an alternator.
The weather was just perfect for max. engine power. Mike's plan was to try to stay with Moser as long as possible. Those first laps with those guys in a 4 car train was very cool to watch. Say what you want about RA, the drafting adds a whole dimension you don't get at most tracks. Mike did great, disciplining himself to stay back and pressure Mike Moser as long as he could. On lap 9, he hit the bumpers at T12 and picked up some play in the steering and had to get a little cautious to make sure for the finish as Greg was still back there waiting for a mistake to help him.
It was great to see Bill Trainer move up to 5th for a while but the mechanical problems he's been chasing, bit him once again. But a great drive for him as well. Thanks to Dayle Frame for the prod party, too bad about the crash, sounds like it's repairable at least.

Congrats to the leaders of the race, they were certainly fast.

We all got supremely lucky with the dry Saturday AM qualify or it
would have been a pretty wacky start.

It was a tough week for the roadsters.

Albin and Griffin went out for hardship immediately before the
race and Jay must have broke something because he missed the
grid and had to start from the back. Isley and Moser almost missed,
rolling in about 30 secs before the 1 was shown.

There was oil dry around half the track on the out lap so someone
greased it down during the warm-up (oil on the track was the theme
of the week).

With Ron B’s retirement and Griffin in the back we had a decent
start in 7th. Locked up the brakes a bit in 3 due to cold tires but nothing major.
Going into 5, Bestwick got a good run and was right next to me
into the braking zone. I got ½ of the braking done when the car had a WTF
moment, snapping left and crashing right into the side of the red Yaris. Sorry for
the rotten introduction to H-Prod Runoffs racing Jamie...

I sat at the bottom of 5 and saw the additional carnage of Dayle and
Schultz come into view, thinking I must have caused it all. Got back on
track after I realized nothing was broken and rejoined at the back after
a quick stop in the pits.

Watching Dayle’s in-car, the 510 did the exact same thing when he came
into the corner in the same spot I did, so there must have been fluid on the outside
edge of the track. :(

Had a some good dicing with Bestwick and Wright mid-race, we swapped spots
several times. Fortunately I had the lead through 8 when those two
tangled. Sorry for the really rotten introduction to H-Prod racing....

Almost got Eichelberger at the end.

Gotta figure out how to get 120+ MPH trap speeds out of the
Fiat for next year.

Matt, please don't feed the bears!

Looking at the trap speeds, seems like 110-113 without a draft and 116-119 with the draft. In the entire race, only two incidents of a 120+ trap speed were recorded, both during serious draft trains.

Who would have thought that little car of yours packed that much of a punch, took out a good portion of the passengers side. If only that would have been the end of it for Jamie. The good news is no major injuries, and Jamie wants to get back out there next year - but I don't think it will be in this car.

Dayle, sorry to see you 3 get tangled up, especially on the first lap. I guess I used up my bad luck for the season at VIR and got by this one.

I noticed on grid that Bestwick's Yaris had a GoPro video camera mounted on the outside of the rear quarter panel. I bet that video would be an interesting one as well...if the camera survived.

I suspect it landed in Matt's lap, it was right around the point of impact.

Jason,
Do you start the Yaris with a key? When you move your hand to shift, it looks like there's a key there.
Thanks

Yeah, doesn't everyone? The key chain also has a key for the transport side window latches and one for the Aerocatch hood pins. :D

Due to the nature of these cars it was easier (and smarter) to keep things like a key ignition and the clutch safety switch, so when we put guest drivers in them there is one less thing to figure out.
