FP Runoffs thread

Isn't it great that the production car races are always the best races of the Runoffs. SCCA has come a long way but our cars still provide the best show.

The best quote of the week was when Jesse Prather brought Eric's logbook up to tech to get his tech decals. He said that Eric was too busy with PR stuff to come get them. Then, he says, "I guess I'm Eric's bitch!"

Congrats to all of you for a great Runoffs. Next year will be the 50th SCCA Runoffs and I hope all of you will make plans to come race. It would be great to see 50 cars in each prod race, one for each year of the Runoffs. I'm sure Eric will have a great program planned for all of you and it will be a happening to not miss.

Hey all, ...all I can say is wow!

For my week, first was overcoming the tech interpretation on my door hinges. It was resolved in the end in my favor and no hard feelings for tech. It's a tough job, rules enforcement!

Next was popping the head gasket on the fresh engine early in the second session. So I opted to swap to my spare engine which was last years Runoffs engine on which I'd run the whole season just to get here. Changed it on Saturday and also had Taylor Race fix an issue I had with the trans, but missed third qualifying and so was gridded on the restored first session time, 13th on the final grid.

Off the start, the car ran incredibly strong and I was able to move up easily to the front. Eric commented on his times and I also was surprised at the pace. Fastest laps I've ever run!

But stuff happens...To Rick, class act to stay around and be there on the grid to send us off. Race with you next year, I hope. Sympathies to Ken. 3rd year in a row for that car to have a throttle linkage issue at RA and drop out. Man, that's rough. Charlie was a factor, don't know what happened to him. Kevin had a rough ride out of corner 6 and that was the break for me, sorry dude! Chuck, you showed you had the speed at Sprints and the Scirocco is back, unfortunate that the handling let you down. Finally to Eric, though I've never had the dream season or "from the pole" drive you had going, I do know the utter frustration falling short of the podium in your grasp.

Congratulations to Steve on your seventh. I only wish you'd been able to run to the finish in GTL. Shout out to Bobby Lentz (former GP Datsun competitor), so close, my friend! And to Sam, that was a great race! You stayed strong while my rear tires gave up the grip. Good luck defending your rallycross championship!

Here's to next year, the 50th!

I was the guy that 'pushed' Ruck off. First lap I stuck it into 6 beside Kevin after he started braking.
He saw a flash of yellow beneath his window net and his quick reflexes took - he swerved right causing him to head off the track. We never made contact. I did track out more than I probably should have -- but it didn't matter at that point as he was already gone. Sorry just racing hard. Ruck came back on 3 cars back beside\behind Wessel.

This was the first real weekend for the radials. As it worked out the longer I run on them the slower I go.

Later in the race the breather tube came off the tranny. Smoking and making things a bit slippery. But hey, after the oils gone the smoke stops.

A little slow to post, much like my week at the Runoffs.

Congrats to Steve - another awesome job, nothing but my respect for what you do. It was good to watch the video to see all the positions changing up front, very entertaining race. Great podium with Sam Henry and Bill Wessel. Of course my heart goes out to Eric - great season and great drive at the Runoffs. Sorry to see the issues for Ken and Charlie. I wish I could have added another Miata to the mix up front.

The week started out nicely with Jesse working some magic on the dyno and giving me a substantial bump in hp/tq from what I had the last time I was here two years ago (thanks Jesse). I had a slightly different set up with my O2 sensor, but apparently hadn't secured the cables. On the dyno I melted the connector, taking out the gauge and the sensor, which would really be an issue as the week evolved.

In Q1, I decided to scuff my race tires then come in and change tires and go out for the balance of the session, but the session was stopped short. In Q2 I found myself in a nice gap on the out-lap going into Canada Corner, but then as I came out of T-14 it seemed like P1-10 were all in a tight scrum, ready to start a race...WTF? I caught Mark Weber, who didn't really want me to screw up his lap and I didn't force anything. After a lap or two of following that I came into the pits to try and find a gap on track, but then missed a shift. At that point I started to wonder if I was going to follow Rick Harris to the sidelines and lost focus on my driving.

As I went out for Q3 the engine sounded a bit off. I did a lap but it was misfiring and came in. Not only did I want to move up, but I really needed to get some track time. After checking things a bit, Don Tucker happened to be around and suggested that we check the temp's of the individual header runners with an IR pyrometer (thanks Don). Sure enough there was a pretty big drop off on 1 & 2 and we figured it was a clogged injector. Rick Harris offered up his set and Bill Lamkin offered up his spare set, but they were both a different size than I run (thanks Rick & Bill). So we put Rick's in and headed off to the dyno. After some initial attempts to dial it in, Jesse asked if we were low on fuel- but I knew we weren't. The fuel pressure was dropping 15psi during a pull....end of dyno session and off to find a new pump. One of the vendors had the in-tank pump and we were back in business, but the dyno guys were getting ready to pack it up. We loaded Rick's tune into my car, and hoped for the best. I got there early on Sunday to go out for the hardship laps, but hadn't read the supps to know that you needed to have a card from the CS to get on track - my bad, big mistake.

At the start, the car didn't pull as well as the other around me and Scott Lunder tried to give my some additional acceleration with a bump. He came around to apologize after the race, but I understood that I was just in his way as everyone moved forward. As we went exited T-3 and headed down to T-5, I could see cars driving around me. As we exited T-5 and went up the hill, I watched Mark Weber and Mason come together in my mirror. I watched to make sure that I wasn't collected, but then felt contact - but it was with Wild Bill H. I feared that as I watched Mark & Mason I drifted into Bill and apologized for it after the race - after watching SpeedcastTV's coverage it seemed like there was more room to Bill's right to avoid the contact (Bill -congrat's on a P6 in your first Runoffs). The only real excitement came when Austin Britton and a CRX came together in T3 in front of me. The Lotus was sideways in the track in front of me - and I swear that he raised both hands and grabbed the top of the roll cage as he was sliding - unfortunately my front facing camera wasn't recording. Not sure what happened to him at the end of the race near the Sargento bridge.

So that is two Runoffs in a row that I haven't gone as fast as I did my first year. I will need to figure this out before I make another trip back there.

Thanks goes out to:
Jesse Prather Motorsports
Mazdaspeed
Hoosier Tires
Carbotech Brakes

My crew for the Runoffs; Steve Hussey, Tim Connors, Bill Blust and my dad. Thanks for putting up with me.
My wife for allowing me to "check out" the six weeks prior to the Runoffs while getting things ready.

Thanks for all of the kind words. This was a tough year. I will blame Sam Henry for putting the 'Bad Luck' VooDoo on me after having so much good luck over the previous four years. From tranny, shock, handling, tire, intake/exhaust issues and then a broken rod, 2012 was all bad luck. Thanks Sam. :)

Congrats to Steve and all. :applause: I was glad to loan out parts to three different competitors. I really feel for Eric.

Next Year...

Anyone else wondering why the SCCA has not posted an article about the F prod race. All 28 other classes are and have been done. Just curious, kind of like to send the link out to my non-racer friends.

WOW what a race enjoyed it very much !Eric what a drive!Steve Congrads on the win. That was the best race of the runoffs IMHO.Action everywhere and clean racing.Watched it twice!Loved to see the #47 get up and move !41 years of watching SSCA racing and i still love the Prod racing the best great show guys.Sprman : )

Sorry for the long winded, self centered report.

I’d like to share my view of the FP Runoffs race and acknowledge some of the people that helped our team have another terrific season in 2012.

Crew Chief Matt Longpine and I spent plenty of hours in the shop. My wife Jennifer was understanding of our effort. Our new in 2011 engine was still running fine. It was short of our power goals on the dyno, but it did have a wider power curve. At the Runoffs, I was located in the East Street Auto/Springfield Dyno tent which was located near champion row. I had teammates for the week: SM Pole and race winner Jim, second place team mate Craig, Pat who ran up front with his team mates for most of the race, and Charlie (3rd SSC) and Mike from Saferacer. Tent atmosphere was perfect. Mike (different Mike) from Sports Car has recognized our season effort and we got a couple of mentions in the “Who will win” issue. It’s always fun to see your name in print, and Mike forecasted a deep FP field.

Q1 was a total mess for me. I started 4th due to national points. I was hoping the top 4-6 of us could line up and knock out some quick laps. Well, that didn’t work for several reasons. I was frustrated. Add in only three “warm” laps (not worthy of being hot) and it wasn’t a good session. Rick reminds me it could be worse.

Q2 was better, but I struggled with good laps, then the traffic kicked in. I finally called it quits after several laps of traffic followed by getting pushed into the grass by the nice bike guy driving the red prius/yaris thing. No hard feelings, but it was icing on the cake to another bad session. Somehow I stayed in P6. I did hit the wrong gear as well. That’s two times in the last year, so I’m hoping I don’t “Harris” a rod. I will rebuild over winter.

Q3 was the lucky one for me. I figured with the rain and very cold temps, that the track wouldn’t hold any speed. I almost didn’t go out. I finally went out when I saw some of the fast guys going to grid. I figured I’d go scuff some tires anyway. The track was covered with oil dry from 12 to 14. I was again disappointed. I kept hitting traffic too. I did get to follow the black HP VW for a while. Seemed like nice speed for an HP car. I should send him the video. Eventually I tried for a few hot laps and I got lucky. I caught cars are decent spots and was able to get 3 fairly clean laps (after about 4-5 crowded laps). I was lucky I didn’t run out of gas. I was only planning on doing 3-4 laps total. A 2:34.0 put us 4th on the grid and I finally got to smile until I realized fast guys Kevin and Ken were right behind me!

Now for the Race, as luck has it my crew chief Matt is feeling really sick. In fact, He decides to turn the radios over to long time prod racer Curtis Wood. The start of the race was very clean for the top 3 rows. We were still lined up 2X2X2 entering braking for T1. Still clean through T3 and I get a run and draft on Charlie to move into P3. I defend into T5 and I’m surprised to have a run on Saris coming out of T5. So I go ahead and get inside of him into T6. I should have been nervous about being in P2, but I found myself in a familiar comfortable environment right on Prill’s bumper. I give the red car a couple of let’s go pushes out of T8 IIRC. I enjoy racing with Prill. Our styles are similar and we have yet to have any unintentional contact. I also notice some oil smoke from his car. Enough that I was worried it wouldn’t last. I wonder if it was related to brake fluid?

As we start lap 2, Charlie Campbell is giving me a monster push up the hill. In fact, we are going so fast I’m forced to get out of line for fear of crashing Prill because of the closure rate Charlie and I had on him. On the TV, it looks like I abandoned the Mazda’s to get with Steve, but it was only to keep from knocking the bumpers off of mine and prill’s car. After years in SM, I know how hard is too hard. Thanks to Charlie’s push, I end up leading the race. All is right in my own little world. A couple corners later, the pack lines up and Steve powers by me with all kinds of time to spare down into T5.

Ken and Campbell bump draft past next lap. Prill drops in behind me and he is pushing me while Ken and Campbell are pushing. The four miatas are bumper to bumper while Steve leads us all. Prill rockets through 6/7 and passes me into 8. So I’ve gone from 4th to the lead and back to 5th in less than 3 laps! Well the good thing about being in the back of a pack is that you don’t have to worry about what’s behind you. Unless, there is some hundred year old white Datsun catching you. Geez, I thought Bill was fixing a head gasket or something. I draft past Charlie which is kind of sad, because it’s a hoot to watch him slide that car around. I’m 100% sure that he doesn’t lift just because he’s 4 off! Bill must have marched past Charlie, because that Datsun is in my mirrors soon. Then he drafts past (easily). I’m wondering if there is some rule that allows old cars to get an extra 20 HP; because I’m convinced the two fastest cars are Steve and Bill down the straights except maybe that Acura. Speaking of Ruck, now I’m starting to see him in the mirror behind Charlie. I do all I can to stay in Bill’s draft and Charlie and Ruck fade from my mirror.

I spend several laps just following Bill. We dip into the high 2:32's. Easily the fastest laps I've ever turned there! I poke out every now and then just to test some waters, but for the most part I’m in line. Ken broke a few laps ago (3 years in a row), so that puts me and Bill fighting over the last podium spot. I notice we are not losing ground to Prill/Saris and may even be catching them some. Eventually, Bill starts sliding more and more and I’m able to stay in the draft better as the difference in cornering speeds work to my advantage. Around lap 10 Bill and I go deep into T5. I mess up the corner pretty good and miss my marks, but Bill has really “got lost in the box.” That lets me get inside of him in T6 for the pass into P3. I really put my head down to break the draft before we get to the kink. It works! I focus on laps and I’m able to keep Bill from re-passing. It’s not long until I go past T12 and see a big dust cloud. I can’t see what’s in it, but soon realize that there is only a spitfire in front of me. I hate it for Eric. He did everything right this year, and just had some bad luck. Lappers gave me a few scares and so did the oiled down T13/T14 on the last lap.

Overall, I’m thrilled with P2! I don’t know how to top it. I know I had a few gifts to get to second, but that may be the norm in Prod. Thanks to Mazda, Goodyear, Springfield Dyno, Saferacer, Electromotive, East Street, and all who have helped. Sorry about the long winded report.

Isn't bump drafting avoidable contact? The stewards really should crack down on that. You shouldn't have to be wiling to have someone lean on your bumper to run up front. If I finished sixth and the guys in front of me were bump drafting, I'd protest them all. I really don't feel that this is appropriate in amatuer racing.

Ok, off my soap box now.

After Q1 I realized that my "Runoffs" engine wasn't going to cut so we decided Friday morning to change engines (thanks Jim Drago for use of the cherry picker). I guess that's what you get for finishing the engine one night and loading the trailer the next without really "running" the engine. After all that I managed to qualify 12th not too bad considering... but not great either. I was really hoping for a top 10 starting pos.

At the start of the race I was boxed in with no where to go but Brian Linn's trunk (still sorry about that Brian I didn't think I was going to hit you that hard). After the first lap settled down I found myself going back and fourth with Mason as Larry and Bill pulled further and further away. I made the decision to tuck in behind Mason and work with him to catch Larry and Bill. So for the next 3 laps I followed Mason and we started reeling in Larry until I spun in 14  . Mason went on to catch Larry and Bill and I was left in a battle with Mark Weber for the next few laps. On the last lap I caught up to Larry, who's car seemed to be crippled by an off earlier in the lap, and as I went to set up for a pass going into 8 I spun in someones oil and ended up in the grass with a car that wouldn't re-fire. Oh well, that's racing.

As I watched the video for the past couple nights I realized I have a tremendous amount of work to do before I belong at the pointy end of this extremely talented field. I'll be back next year with a car a little more developed and a driver a little quicker (hopefully).

I would like to thank Mike Puskar and family from Carbotech for all the awesome support they gave me all week! Also a great set of Carbotech pads that are extremely rotor friendly and were fade free to the very last lap. I never had so much confidence in the brake zone before.

Ok, off my soap box now.

I worked a corner on the Monday test day. We were told over the net that bump drafting was OK unless it was in the corners. Yes, it was a test day but our stewards were running things. I'm told that bump drafting was allowed during the rest of the qual sessions.

Is it normal practice to allow stewards to decide to ignore rules and not change the supps to reflect the change? Seems like they would need to clarify it in the supps.

I have no problem with bump drafting, unless I'm hard on the brakes for Turn 8.....coughcharliecough...

Sam, I was looking at my in-car video and mylaps yesterday, trying to figure out how it is that I completely lost track of you and Bill after getting within ~1 second of you guys, and you guys picked the perfect time to get in line! I had finally just got close enough to get your guys draft, when Charlie got stuck in gear in the carousel and I had to go around the outside. My gap went from maybe 8 car lengths coming out of 8 to probably 40 by Canada corner. Right at that same time, I could see that you had firmly slotted in behind Bill and we're just going to turn laps. Over the next couple of laps, you guys dipped into the 2:32's, and walked away while I was too busy missing three shifts (three in two laps  ). With absolutely no draft help by that point, my race was over.

I'll put my in-car video up once I get it processed. I have a new computer, and apparently there's no video editor on it that'll handle the .vd4 file from my Race Technology system, so I need to get that figured out.

6.11. RULES OF THE ROAD
6.11.1 On Course Driver Conduct
A. Drivers are responsible to avoid physical contact between cars on
the race track.

Bobby, I thought the same thing as I watched the FP race. I know my Prod car would not hold up too bump drafting, nor would many others. I know SRF bump drafting at Watkins Glen is watched for, they still do it, but at least they are watching for it and it is called in if seen.
Is this one of those "wink, wink" rules we have?

From Dayles first hand experience, I guess physical contact between cars is OK. I can see the Protest appeal paperwork now. "I was bump drafting him through the last turn on the last lap, Its not my fault he spun, the stewards said that was ok"

Yea, I saw you coming and was worried. Really worried after just being chased down by Bill who started way back. Bill was running smoking laps and I thought I should line up and see if we could knock out some good qualifing type laps. It really worked. He's got the power to pull me faster down the straights. I can't draft up on him until right at the end of the straight. I think your right. When Bill and I were not losing ground to steve/eric during that point in the race, I knew our pace was fast enough and we could have our own race later. Basically, I was just running scared ;)

I really wanted to let everyone know how clean the race was up front. Everyone in the top 6 on the grid drove clean. I didn't see any noses chopped off, dive bombs, or anything. It was proper racing and I was happy to be a part of it! Some of the best racing I've ever been involved in. We looked like a bunch of wanks in Q1, but we figured it out! I'm just sick that my video stopped working on the warm up lap.

First runoffs, first time at speed at RA, talk about sensory overload!! First off, I would like to thank Jesse for taking time from his busy schedule to allow me to pick his brain as I sorted out a few issues on the car, also thanks to he and Eric for the pointers during the track walk. Of course all pointers were quickly forgotten as I went out for q1.

The track is simply amazing, but I am not a quick study and struggled with braking points and apex points most of the weekend. The most difficult turns for me to get a hold of were 1 and 3, I started getting a good feel for the carousel as the race progressed. As of the end of the race, I have a total of 20 laps at speed at RA. I'm in the process of digesting the experience and reviewing data. Hopefully, I will be more comfortable next year, at the very least, I will be more familiar with braking and turn in points for next year. Looking at my video I left a few seconds on the table hopefully I can clean it up next year, and run more consistently and a bit faster.

Brian, looking at the video, I should have moved to the right to avoid contact, but in the heat of the moment, chose to hold my ground. I was busy looking at you, and didn't realize that there was still the majority of a car width to my right. I thought I was closer to the edge of the track and didn't want to get into the grass as we approached turn 6. Given our discussion after the race I feel that we both agree that it was just racing.

Special Shout Out To Mazdaspeed and their support throughout the 2012 season.

Sorry so late everyone.
Congrats to Steve, Sam and Bill excellant job.
First I'd like to say it was very nice seeing all of you again. That week was kind of strange for me. It was a lot like the whole year went, too many other things going on to where I never really got focused right. Stuff maybe I shouldn't have been doing at the track. You all know how bussiness can get in the way. Eric I don't know how you did your job all week and still raced so well. Great job, it should have ended better.
For me the car was very good except for the breaks could have been better. (I really am sorry Kevin) I was having a great time trying to work with Sam and Ken but I couldn't stop making those little mistakes that can kill you.
When it was over Tom and I were disappointed enough we drove 10 hours straight home, put the cars away and said we'd had enough for this year. First time in 11 years we didn't do the Glen enduro together. But 2 weeks ago I got the sm out and went to Nelson for the regional just to have some fun. Did just that winning 4 spints with a track record and a 20 lap pursuit race starting 31st. Feeling some better now and thinking of next year although like Eric finances may cut back on the number of races.
Anyway everyone have a great winter, take care and hope to see you all in the spring.

Not that big of a deal. I was just surprised by the level of aggression five minutes into our first session of the week, by a lot of people out there. Probably the built up rage of having to sit around and watch until Thursday night before they ever let us out! Removing the rear bumper cover and beating its support beam back straight was about the only thing I had to do to the car all week.
