Really, a 40 minute qual session is a waste of time. Why not do a 15 min practice first, then a 20 min qual session, then the races. Makes much more sense to me. But what do I know..... I think 30 min at the runoffs is a waste as well.

FWIW, a double National needs 70 minutes of practice/qualifying time over the course of the event. However, how that is split up is completely up to the organizers. I'd personally prefer to see a 20 pract and 20 qual if you could squeeze it in. I'm certainly not going to go burn my good qualifying/race tires for 40 minutes. I suspect you may end up with a lot of empty track at the end of the sessions.

Based on the current number of people signed up I think we will all have a lot of open track. I am hoping the entries pick up as the date gets closer.

I guess my only advantage is a little track knowledge.....LOL

I think Randy Wagner has been to all of the SCCA races held at the track.

Curiosity question - as drivers, would you be willing to spend a session on a corner if your car breaks and is parked safely there? Without a doubt, the biggest challenge in scheduling a race day is the amount of time it takes a to get cars off the course. Many times, seamless sessions could be done - where one group is coming off the track as the second group is being fed onto the track - if there's no pickups to be done. This used to be done somewhat at the RunOffs where there was 5 mins between odd/even groups and 15 mins between even/odd groups. (I haven't been able to attend the RunOffs since they moved to Road America, so I don't know if this practice is still being done.)

Flaggers can get very creative at "tucking" cars - if it helps to stay on schedule and the drivers are cooperative. By saving the between session time, you can probably get your two sessions without adding dramatically to the length of the day .

Just my thoughts,

I'm with Eric on this one.

If we could get a 20 min practice, I could get a general idea of how the track is laid out - possibly make adjustments before Quali.

As is, I need a crew to make changes, or need to get out and make my own changes in pit lane, during my only time on the track before the race.

Not that I'm complaining - looking forward to finally getting out there.

My buddies that run BMW club love the track.

Kelley, if I have two sessions before the race, then sure.

With just one, no that's really awful.

Bill ...

My thoughts were as a way to facilitate two sessions instead of the one 40 min session.

Kelley

PS - We'll see you there.

All the GCR cares about is the posted time. How the stewards decide to get the cars on and off the track is a nother matter.

Kelley - awesome thanks for listening.

I'd say it's looking really good for me to make the event, but I don't say such things any more.

Interesting schedule. Not sure I see the benefit in a 40-minute qualifier to open the weekend--particularly on a track that most national drivers have not seen. I'd much rather have two shorter sessions, maybe one of them even being a practice to learn where the place goes.

I realize the schedule isn't made for my edification, but do any of the drivers see much benefit to this rather than two shorter sessions like every other two-day double national I've ever been to?

At our DN's, we combined the practice sessions for both races together so that each race groiup would get a 20 minute practice, a 25 minute qualifying for race 1, race 1, a 25 minute qualifying for race 2 and race 2 in that order. This was done so that if you broke in race 1, you weren't on the hook for race 2. This met the 70 minute GCR requirement.

It's also looking like groups 3 and 4 can be moved into other groups which makes for even more available time to split the qualifying session up for practice.

I have been talking with the people from the NR about doing just that.

I would think moving the SM to Group 1 and the AS to Group 2 is do able. Then combining group 4 with group 6 should work. Only issue would be car numbers. SM #3 and HP #3 are the only cross overs so far. Not sure if there are any GCR or operational issues with combining the two formula groups.

Why do we need to combine groups? There already seems to be a very workable number of race groups.

Would we be adding a session with the new found time in the schedule? I would only be in favor of adding more classes to my group if it meant a better schedule.

Group 3 only has 3 registered. Group 4 only has 1 registered so far. The other groups are looking ok car count wise. Group 6 is the smallest at 7 entries.

Eric,

What would you like to see as a schedule, the more normal 15-20 minute practice followed by 20-25 minutes qualifying session? If we combine group 3 and 4 that will free up the time to allow for bringing in disabled cars after each run group. Even combining 4 with 6 should give enough time to split the schedule up.
