I don't think "contender" is the right word - poor aero, SOHC, 2350lbs, avg. HP brakes, antiquated/limited parts availability - not seeing one good trait. The only potential savior over the 318 is MAYBE it breaths better vs. the crappy early FI intake manifold on the early E30.I see they classified the 2002 in H. Now if they had done this 25 years ago--.
When I ran my 2002 in F my times were good enough for top 5 in H. I was running mid pack in F at Mid Ohio.
I think the 2002 can be a good contender in H. The weight is a little high.

$50 says ask again and get a few letters (by known HP competitors and assorted nobodies like me) of support and they'll say yes at a slightly silly weight...To you as well, my friend!
2023 was my last shot at it, I'm giving up on it.
The response to the first letter was "2.0L is considered too much displacement for HP".
Then they added 2L cars into HP, like a few months later.
So then I resubmitted the request and I got "The PAC would like to see these attempted [in FP first]". Against Miatas and Hondas? What are you smoking? I emailed "a prominent PAC member" about that and his reply was "...HP guys already screamed about the 2L cars coming into H and then to put a [rear wheel drive] in there would be yet another big step..." So basically, the 2L allowance in H Prod was only for front-wheel drive cars.
Yet here we are today with the BMW 2002, a rear-wheel drive car.
So why bother going through this again? What will be their next hypocritical excuse? "We don't allow orange 2L cars with a P-badge into the class"?
I'm done. No motivation to pursue it further. I run it once a year in ITEZ at the Lime Rock regional to retain my comp license and then race it elsewhere with other orgs. It's safer that way, anyway.
If anyone else wants to try it, ensure you get the 2-stage dry sump approved for LP, otherwise you're going to frag engines every session on sticky tires (DO NOT race this engine without a dry sump!) It should already be in there for the 1.8L in HP and the 2L in FP.
And here's tips on Micro/Megasquirting with the stock induction.
