US Majors - Pueblo

The Majors at Pueblo Motorports Park is only a week away. This used to be my favorite track a few years ago - I haven't run it since they repaved, added berms, made 9 faster and 10 slower and more dangerous (track out is right next to a wall).

There's currently 76 entrants and I believe that's already a record for this event.

Prod and GTLite are together again, as group one. Saturday is practice/qual/25 min race - Sunday is hardship and 45 minute race only.

Unlike the HPR Majors, there's a $100 refund if you blow up Saturday, so this event will cost only $400 for one day. </sarcasm>

Fuel situation is kinda sucky - there's "maybe" some old drums of fuel onsite, but really the place to get fuel is ~10 miles away. Heres' the fuel guy's contact info:

I'm almost done with repairs from HPR. Wiring turned out really nice. Oil leaks fixed. New battery is on the charger ready to go.

Bill, Gary Watson from WRE INC,

1) We sell VP Racing Fuels. At the pump we have VP 110 leaded at $7.50 per gallon, VP 101 unleaded at $8.00 per gallon and we have 91 octane no ethanol (amazing fuel) at $4.39 per gallon. Also we have a 103 octane low lead that is only sold in 54 gallon drums for $270. Supplies are limited ( current stock is 5 Drums). In drums and 5 gallon pails, we have just about any octane, whether leaded or unleaded. We have nice selection of Brad Penn racing oils( 10/30,10/40,20/50 weights and we also carry Mobil 1 (20/50). We also have wide assortment of VP fuel jugs. Payment: cash or credit card.


2)Our address is 35098 US 50 Business East. Directions off I-25 are, Exit 99A (US 50 Business east),first stop light is Santa Fe Ave, turn left on to Santa Fe Ave, you will be heading south, you will cross a green steel bridge (stay in left lane) there is a fork in the road, turn left. You are on Santa Fe Ave heading east. At this point you will come 6.5 miles east and we will be on the right side of the road. There is a high school right across the street from me (Pueblo County High School). You have reached your destination.

3) Our days and hours are Monday - Friday 9 am-6 pm, Saturday 9 am-3 pm.

I ran there in 2012 right after the repave and while the assessment of 10 being "more dangerous" is certainly subject to ones opinion, I will disagree with the assessment of the track-out being next to the wall. I found track out to be very gradual and there's a definite buffer strip of grass/dirt between the track and the wall, just as before. Hingston will certainly argue that the grading was not as desired in 2012. Hopefully that's been addressed.

Change in Schedule at Pueblo equals more track time:

A couple of changes have been made in the schedule and run groups for the coming Majors Tour Event at Pueblo Motorsports Park. A revised schedule will be posted to msreg and to the CDR website soon. Here is the information provided by the Majors and SCCA:

“If you’re attending the Mid-States Majors Race at Pueblo next weekend, please note that there have been some changes to the schedule since it was originally posted.

Because of the car count on the entry list 10 days out from the event, Spec Miata and Spec Racer Ford will be combined into one run group, Group 3. Effort was made to contact a number of Spec Racer Ford and Spec Miata drivers to increase those counts, but for this weekend, the groups will be combined. Spec Miata and Spec Racer Ford will race with split starts on both Saturday and Sunday. The lone STL entry has been moved to Group 1, as well.

While every attempt was made to use the original schedule, the late changes are a more effective use for the event as a whole.

The changes in the schedule will result in extended practice time for every group. Saturday practice sessions have been extended to 20 minutes, and each run group will have a 15-minute warm-up on Sunday morning.”

Eric and I disagree about turn 10, I don't like it at all, and think it is much more dangerous than the "old" configuration. Eric is correct, the grading is crap, if you get off track more than a couple of feet the grading runs down hill to the wall. Two simple solutions, (1) don't drive off track...no sh*t, (2) Go back to the old configuration...that's never going to happen. So, learn how to go thru 10, and put the ego away if you turn in to early, get on the brakes, the longer you wait the better the chance you are going to hit the wall.
 
To anyone going to Pueblo for the first time that isn't familiar with the turn, you cross the burnout area of the drag strip as you enter it. You do this more slowly and much earlier on the strip than the old configuration but with more cross load on the car. I will concede that the cross load creates a bigger issue in controlling the car over the vhp-covered drag lane. But, you are going more slowly and most of the transition is done before the concrete portion, whereas before all of it was on the concrete IIRC. I remember seeing people hit the wall coming out of T10 going back to my first time at the track in the 90s. Some big hits because they were going very fast. It's very tricky and yes when you have a tricky corner lined in walls, that makes it dangerous. I suspect the changes were to try to slow cars down, and it did but it created a separate issue. Is that worse than having a corner that was different every weekend, session or lap because of cone placement? Maybe so.

My intention was not to debate this vs the old though, but rather talk about what's there for the folks making their first visit.

Yes it does, thank you! I was looking for good footage online last night. I would review my footage from 2012 but it would be in slow motion compared to Mr. Prills :oops:

Thanks for the fuel info Bill, looks like we need to make a Friday fuel run. Looks like the weather will be perfect. Hopefully no dust storm this time. Look forward to seeing everyone in beautiful Colorado!

Forgot about that. That Saturday race was insane - huge dust storm followed by heavy rain. Came at the perfect time for me as the car had just become stuck in 4th gear!

I think Puueblo is my newest favorite track. In my opinion it has 3 pucker factors which is how I rate tracks. :) At the bottom of the hill at the turn in at 5, then sharply up the hill through 6. What a blast as it's all blind up the hill into 7. Then the mini kink at 8 is also a blast. I also consider turn 10 a pucker up because you need to get through and out if there to carry speed down the drag strip. I think the pro in the video makes it look easier than it really is. ;) I remember a couple of quick over steers (but don't over correct then off ya go) as your four wheel sliding through the rubber and just at track out the car grips on the clean concrete. You really have to trust that that the grip is coming, hence the pucker factor.

PROVISIONS:
Pueblo Motorsports Park is a multi-use facility and there will be a Drag Racing event on Friday evening. Do not paddock or camp south of the water hydrants until Saturday. There may also be a Quarter Midget event on Saturday and Sunday. Camping at the track is allowed Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights however, there are no motorhome hookups (Water is available but connections are not. There are no electrical hook-ups). Concessions are available (limited hours and menu)

The drag racing on Friday night is a pain, in my opinion. The drag racers can "buy" paddock spots and pave or do what they want. After setting up on Friday, few years ago, I was told I had to move out of "their" spot.

With 2 hours to go we are at 94 entries with 24 in Group 1 - E Production: 10, F Production: 8, GT-Lite: 2, H Production: 3, Super Touring Lite: 1
 
Couple other things for first timers to Pueblo.

You paddock inside the track, so, once the track goes hot you are stuck either inside or outside. Plan accordingly and don't be late and watch your session from outside the track.

Most things you need, food, hotels, fuel, Home Depot, Walmart, parts stores, etc are within 5-15 minutes of the track. There are a number of salvage yards on the east side of town, I've had good luck in the past with Don's Sportcar Salvage.

If you need anything at the track, come by and ask. I carry a lot of things in the boxtruck and rarely get stumped. I hate to see people leave Saturday when we could have fixed it.

There are no more sold spots in the paddock (new this year)
Although some may think they have rights because they always parked there
Track management should be able to resolve disputes
 
Up to 99 entries. Our group of 25 has no less than six 2014 majors event winners (Longwell, Reynolds, Prill, Hingston, Goodale, and Oleson), and two national champs! (Zekert and Harris).

(Did I forget anyone???)

I know Brian Laughlin is coming from OK for STL which'll make an even 100.

Prod group looks very strong and I look forward to the great competition in my class. PJ and Neal Frank are also 2014 Majors winners in FP.
