Runoffs at COTA

Any thoughts on having the Runoffs take place at Circuit Of The Americas with the provision that no regional or national SCCA races take place there other than the Runoffs

The idea was that it would level the playing field for everyone for the first year since no driver would have seen the track prior to the runons. National finally saw the flaw in their logic. Living 20 miles from the track which will be having open track days, BMWCCA, Porsche Club, Nasa, and a host of other events does anyone really believe we would not have entered another bodies events to get track time? How would "they" stop it? Ban us from the runons if we did perhaps? For that matter they had a charity foot race last week. Can you say TRACK WALK?

Too late for that. there's already a National scheduled for March.
Well so much for that rumor at the 2011 Runoffs

I would love to go. Affording it is another problem. I couldn't even get to this weekends Firebird regional. Two engines in 11, repairs from the runoffs, and some upgrades this year spent the budget for this year. Did you get your dad's car finished?

And COTA is not a HP track? With all of the complaining about RA, I can just imagine what it will be like for COTA. RA is a handling rack from 5-14 and most people slow down way too much for T1.

There is only a 3/4 straight on the back side and another on the front that ends with a 133 foot climb. Why would you think COTA is going to require any horsepower at all? :)

My $.02 is that it is going to take a horsepower car that handles well. Any suggestions?

Thank you!!!! Aren't all tracks a combination of HP and handling?

If it's not a drag strip, all tracks require handling.

It's all just shades of grey. If folks are saying that Road America emphasizes HP over handling too much, then the F1 course at COTA will be even more of a HP track.

Sean, do you want to go?
We can put both cars in one trailer...
I'm seriously considering doing something similar. Find another local racer who's interested in going, put both our cars in my trailer, and split the costs. Lone Star event is scheduled for March 7-9, and the weekend before is Grand-Am Rolex & Continental Series' at COTA (February 18 - March 2). I'm eye-balling making a 1.5 week trip out of it! But damn, that 1200-mile tow will suuuuuuck. But, being that the rest of my schedule for next year is looking like "nothing but local stuff", it might be fun to do just one haul away race, and making it a serious haul.

Grand Am and SCCA convention are the same weekend. This creates a large problem for me.

Reracer,
The question was rhetorical. Smartass doesn't translate well to electrons flowing over wire it would appear.

It is a double national with Sunday a Super tour. Subject to change. There have been many request to make it a double rational. Race chair is looking into it.

IF we had 6 hours to spare in the schedule. Remember in March sunrise is 7:30am and sunset is 5:30pm.

6 30 minutes P&Q sessions 180 min
Lunch 90 (15 travel each way, hour for the workers to eat/relax)
6 35 (Predicted) races 210
subtotal 480 or 8 hours IF there are no delays or long clean up periods between races.

Unless chumpcar wants to run in the dark, which is not allowed in the contract I could give them maybe an hour a day. What I would rather do is add a 7th group and add either a restricted regional group or a PDX group.

Double rational at Houston 2 weeks before includes rig parking for $20 and we'll help with shuttle to/from Hobby (Southwest Air).

90 min for lunch is crazy. IMHo. Major waste of daylight. It would be cheaper to pay for workers and give them 1/2 hr.
Either the PDX of rational would sell well.
Chumpcar loves the dark and would fill that time with lots of money.

1. The 90 is planned into the schedule to allow for adjustments. If there is a major incident in the morning that requires a long clean up we cut the lunch short and get the afternoon session back on schedule.

2. The weather is, shall we say, unpredictable in March in central Texas. We allow a little time so the workers can get out of the cold and wind for a short time.

3. Happy workers are more likely to be repeat workers. If workers don't come you don't race.

4. It gives the tech crew time to make it to lunch after the 30 minute impound is up for race 1 which is normally scheduled before lunch.

was just there for the GP. what a GREAT facility!
will they use the full circuit? i did see one cutoff as i walked the track saturday but it is a very small and strange chicane?
if all club racers could see the track the entry in march would be 500 cars. its just epic...
