Prod Car showcase race at Waterford Hills.

WATERFORD HILLS ROAD RACING
Showcase Race Series
Over the past several years each race weekend Waterford Hills has been featuring one group of cars in a Showcase Race series. Some of the groups that participate are Corvettes, Formula Firsts and Atlantics. I’d like to offer that opportunity to the Production Car group the last race weekend of the year on October 1 and 2.

If you can ever use the word economical and racing in the same sentence this is it. For the price of a regular entry you get:
Saturday practice/qualifying session with Group 3 Cars
Saturday 10 lap Class race with the Group 3 Cars
Saturday 15 lap Showcase Race with Production Cars Only
Sunday 10 lap Class Race with Group 3 Cars
Sunday 15 lap Showcase Race with Production Cars
Sunday 10 lap Feature Race with Group 3 Cars

Group 3 includes ITA, IT7, EP, FP, HP, GTL, SRF, GT3 and STL
For anyone a bit rusty or unfamiliar with the Waterford Hills track there is an Open Practice Day on Friday September 30 between Noon and 4:00PM.
The actual Showcase format is flexible in terms of setting the race grids and running the races. Showcase Grids can either come directly from qualifying or from finishing position in an earlier Class Race. Races could be run with inverted grids. As I said we can set the Showcase format as we choose.
I would like to see 15 Prod Cars participate. If we come up a car or 2 short we could open the group to include GTL’s.
Information regarding entry forms and fees can be reviewed on the Waterford Hills web site.

One more point of importance... The MUFFLER issue. All cars must have an operating muffler and 75 BD is the max sound level allowed. Cars over the limit will be DQ'd.

Waterford Hills does have camping. I also only live 30 min. from the track and could host a few people.

If you have any questions let me know and I will try to answer.

If you haven't been to Waterford Hills you don't know what you are missing. Sterling Moss said it was one of the greatest secrets of Road Racing (He did a press release for the original Chrysler 300 many moons ago and visited the track).

P.S. cost is going to be around $150 or $175 for the weekend. I'll have to double check

Please let me know who's interest so I can tell Waterford if we want to do this.

Peter

OK, I know the muffler thing is kinda a bummer but it really isn't that bad and I promise you will have a great time.

Trust me for the price, you will get more than enough track time. You will actually be very tired by the end of the weekend.

Also this event will accept car still in G Prod!

Peter

Do you have to join OCSC and pay Waterford membership before you can race with just an SCCA license? How does that part work? Sounds like a lot of good track time!

John, No you do not need to be an OCSC member to race at Waterford. The entry fee is a little higher if you are not a member. If you have your SCCA license you can also come out on the Friday afternoon before any race weekend and get in some track time for cheep! $20 a session, they alternate open wheel closed wheel from noon till 5pm.

To add to Peter's comments about the sound, it is 75db at the property line that is behind the 20' wall along the back straight on the driver's side. I run one $20 flow thru cherry bomb, not an issue.

Ted

Agreed on the muffler...it's actually kind of nice not to go home with my ears ringing. We used to run a cheap tubular muffler as well.

And...what a great track for small prod cars!

This could be a fun way to end the season. I'll see how we come away from Nelson next weekend.

Price will be the same for members a s non-members for the show case race I have been informed.

So far looks like HP will be the race.

HP
Tim Deronne... Festiva
Eric Vickerman....Bugeye
Chris C. ...Spit
Ron Krantz...Spit

FP
John B. ... Maiata
Peter Morton.....Lotus 7
Rich Johnson...Spit

EP
Bruce Wentzel...RX7
Rental ......RX7

If I were to do this weekend, and I didn't do an SCCA sanctioned weekend for the year, would SCCA accept these races to at least renew my regional license for the year? Compared to running the quad-race weekend at Nelson, it's half the cost. Sure I'd have to drive an additional 3 hours to get up to Waterford, but it does sound like fun and it's a track I've never run.

My guess is no....but ask your driver licensing dude. Bryan Floyd does that for GLDiv and can be reached at putz1200 at yahoo dot com.

Dayle,

You should come....I know you will have a good time.

Sorry, man. I still have no motor and I've got no place to put a muffler. That's always been a deal breaker for me and Waterford. But the real dealbreaker is the motor. At this point, I might not be able to go to the prod fest either. It's been one cluster f*#& after another. Now I find out my dog of a motor has a 11.9:1 head on it. So not only was it slow....it was illegal too. Grrrrrrr..........

Come on over Dayle. You can stop by Pete's and grab an engine. Waterford isn't a horsepower track, just has to run.

And ANY muffler will do, even those clamp on Supertrapps are "mufflers". Now that the vegetation has all grown back the new wall keeps things real quiet for the neighbors.

Pete's right above, I'm planning on running. Track time galore.

And SCCA licensing folks have always looked favorably on Waterford participation. No it's not an SCCA event, but is racing. This year's chief Steward is an SCCA regular. He's offered to help out in licensing stuff in the past.

Other showcase groups have made special paddock areas, I'll offer up coordinating that if we'd like to try to do that. It's a tight paddock, but most of our cars are small, right?

This event is really open to all.

Old GP cars are even welcome as well as vintage prod cars. This is just a time to have some fun.

As long as your car meets the current safety requirements your good. Camping is available too.

Waterford Hills is a very challenging track, but it's not so long that horse power is king. A good handling car is a much bigger plus.

Will this be a annual event?

Would be great to make it a annual event and get everyone to plan ahead for next time, anything to help generate interest in running Prod cars.

I might only make one more local event, if I finish putting the car back together.

Right now I have 2 tranmissions all taken apart, have to finish sorting out a rear brake issue and a few other little things. Good thing these cars only have to run for a half hour at a time.

Ted,
I am glad you asked. Waterford recently hosted a Vintage race weekend after a long hiatus. We had a very short time to plan the event, so we kept it simple this year.

One idea i was bashing around, was a " Prod-Fest North " during the Vintage weekend.

Why then? Simple. That is the only weekend we run with a variance
on the sound rule.

Secondly, this is a weekend with plenty of room on a schedule, as we are limited to running from 10am to 6pm.

My thought was, with all the cars around sitting, ( g-prod gt4 gt5 )
that are not "vintage", why not welcome orphans and all.

Slicks? Dry sump ? Crank Fire ? Fiberglass/Flare? , no problem.

Still working on details in my mind, so input is welcome.

One run group, pure "modern" Production and Small bore GT.

So plenty of warning for those with cars and licenses that need attention for next year.

So yes, with interest, this can become an every year event.

The Vintage weekend next year will be end of July or first weekend in August. ( t.b.a.)

What do we need?
A 20 car field would get a run group. We can run up to 36 cars in one group.

Come this year if you can. Plan on next year.
Questions ? input ? Feel free to contact me

Sounds like a great event.

There are many of us that don't care to much about winning, I am more interested in finishing than winning.

Running with a interesting group should be great fun, never know who you might have a close race with.

Only need 20 cars for a group, we get 40+ at the prod fest.

I'm in for next year! I just need to focus this year on getting my required races in for licensure. I haven't had the car out and I should stay close to home to get my weekend in and make my races before making a 4 hour trip.

Keep in touch with the SCCA scheduling folks as there are few events that'll might conflict with that date. WMR national on 8/11, 8/12 comes to mind. I'd suggest keeping it earlier if possible.
