Outcome of front grill/mesh/openings hoo-ha?

Where did we wind up on the screen meshes on the front grill/bumper/openings/etc?

I'm getting ready to refactor my front bumper/airdam and would like to push my current screen out near the front of the grill opening. It's currently tacked on the back of the opening, several inches from the front area.

Just ordered bigger "mesh" for mine.

OK I actually looked at the GCR:

9.1.5.6.h Screens, block-off plates or tape that serve only to protect
or restrict air flow to the radiator(s) and/or oil cooler(s) are
unrestricted, but must be located a minimum of 2” behind
the radiator/cooler opening or behind the stock grill.

IIRC, there was some consternation about whether the 99 miata actually had a grill or not. Guess that doesn't matter, the way the rule is written.

Since my stock "grill" is near the back of that opening, I will opt for the former of the "or" part of the rule, and mount my new mesh about 2.25" back from the front opening.

Jason I think you'd pickup a second or two by reorienting your hoodpins into the wind.

I just need to get close enough on the start to dig my teeth into the back of the Hondas.

^ Great question. The Miatas have what Mazda calls a "Air Guide" that is attached to the rearward part of what I'll call the front grill opening. The GCR glossary defines "Grill" the decorative covering for the grill opening.

Also while reading the rule again depending on what the flat pan attached to the bottom side of the spoiler and extending to the front of the wheel well is called I find the last sentence of the Air Dams rule interesting. In short, the air dam can have no support or reinforcement aft of the wheel well opening.

FYI that pic is from a cult movie in 1975 called "Death Race 2000" and I was having a good laugh when Larry Frankenstein reposted it. The name of the driver of that car in the movie was, wait for it, Frankenstein! AKA David Carridine, the co star was Sylvester Stalone in quite a unique car in its own right. The plot of the movie was a cross country race, to see how many pedestrians you could kill ha! If you get a chance to see it, it is guaranteed to get you laughing.

Revised Prillmobile!

that car looks SWEET!

no air intake on the passenger side?!? speed secret?
No, I must have put the negative in backwards.

With the turbo, the inlet is back on the drivers side.

PS: Looks great. Needs more GoPros.

I was going to do a letter, But being a newbie here. I thought that I was out of place.
My Logic; If tape is open. The front surface of the air dam should also be open. IE stock cars with screen rivited to the face of the dam. Than somebody said 1/4in screen. Some body else said "1/4 in between the wires or air hole size?"?
I fully would expect a rule allowing a surface to be taped and screened at the front ,not inside the air control box, or on the front of the rad.

The only rule I would hope for is that;" the stock grille size opening will remain, the stock grille will remain" The grille being defined as any trim item added to the grille area. Tape and screen is free".

I think that the reality is that the car makes a certain amount of HP over the 30min race time. To keep that engine cool enough to make the HP you will need a certain amount of airflow. The cars in the same speed/HP range will all need the same air/BTU value . making this a non issue.

Qualifying is different and may give all of you engineers a new hobby

If this works, I will send a letter. MM

Prill that grill is awsome. I need to still finish the design on my front grill. Based on the miata in our shop, getting a ita cage, I guess as long as you keep the general top shape you are ok. The bottom front face of your grill must be about 5" forward. So really on my crx I can bring the lower section out to the front bumper edge.
