adhesive for aluminum

A friend of mine broke a chain on his Yamaha R6 sport bike and it broke off the chain guard mount making a 1/2" triangular hole in the block. We have the broken off piece and its a clean break. Its right next to where a transmission countershaft bearing is so to I'm afraid to TIG thinking it might distort it. Any have any luck with epoxies or some other adhesive on aluminum that gets to 200 degrees F or so?

Call or go online to 3M or Loctite. They sell all kinds of exotic structural adhesives for almost every application.

If not structural, and you don't find a good "glue"...then you might do what I did with a hole in the gearbox on my supercharged MR2. I put a bridge bolt thru the case, going to fast over a wooden bridge, and bottomed out.

Make a patch/cover from 050-.060 alum, cut larger, hammer to fit contour, then drill and tap thur it into case mutliple places around the perimeter to attach. Butter the patch with RTV then bolt plate down to the case. I used #8-32 button head screws. My repair is still there and not leaking after 15 years, and over 200K miles. The contour was rather complex, lots of hammering to form...

You could even put a strong back/strap to bolt the old piece in place.

Personally, I'd opt for trying to TIG...low even heat, and just fuse the part in, not big penetration..just wash it over... Go chat with a good welder, first.

All this only works if the case doesn't need the part to be stiff...

I vote for JB Weld. I once purchased a Toyota Supra with a rod out the side of the block. I found the piece of cast iron from the hole, JB welded it back in place and ran the block for another 100,000 miles without a problem. I believe it's what's used to glue some aircraft together so it should work well on aluminum.
