gear sets? What is stock?

Engine revs divided by driveshaft revs for rwd (ie w/ driveshaft), or by wheel revs - which of course includes final drive.

Remove plugs, Jack up the car, mark the front wheels maybe at the fender lip. Mark the crank wheel under the fender. Plop the shifter in second gear. Hand crank the engine, counting the rotations as a helper watches the wheels rotate one time around.( easyier if welded BTW.).
Both front wheels rotated together is the easiest. But you can also lock one wheel and devide the REVs by 2.
For the VW, al the 1st gears are 3.45 so skip that gear.
Second is 2.12 x dif of 3.67 , so the crank rotates 7.78 revs per wheel, and so on.

Most VW gearsets , most came with various engines over the model run.

Reminds me of IT days that were an eye opener for Non VW folks (that still just seems wrong to me)
