Sad news for the WDCR / MARRS community

Not a prod driver, but many in the WDCR / MARRS community knew them, and alot of the WDCR folks read the posts here, so I'm going to post here anyway: Dick Hummel and his wife Cheryl were killed in an auto accident in Winchester VA on Thursday 9/27. Dick drove an MR2 in the MARRS series, competing in ITB this year, and had been a fixture at the DC races for many years. He also drove pace car and helped us out on grid. His wife Cheryl was always up on grid to chat with us and cheer Dick on at his races. They were a lovely couple who I counted as good friends, and they will be sorely missed.

What a shame, Dick was a really nice guy, always went out of his way to stop by to say good luck and hi. Really sorry to hear that. If I remember right he also ran a midget in F for a year or two.

This is very sad. Dick and Cheryl were wonderful people whom always had a kind word for their racing friends.

This crash happened about eight miles south of my house. I drove by the crash scene this morning.

Both Dick and Cheryl were surviving spouses of cancer victims. They met in a spousal support group.

I will miss them both greatly.

Dave - since you're closer to the physical location than we are, if you hear anything about services, what can be done to help the family, etc. please let me know. You can hit me off-line by e-mail, of course. Charyl had had a stroke earlier this year and had recovered quite well from it. She had overcome alot of obstacles; they both had. Such a loss.
