Honda CRX Wheel Bearings and Hubs

I recently purchased (well, traded for) a 1989 Honda CRX F-Prod car. I am in the process of reading the rule book, and going over it and making plans for what I want to rebuild / upgrade.

One question I have not found a good answer on is the durability of hubs and wheel bearings. In my old SSB CRX, I had a maintenance schedule for these as follows:

LF Bearing: Every other weekend
LF Hub: Every third weekend
RF Bearing: Every third weekend
RF Hub: Every sixth weekend.
Rear bearing / hub assembies: Replace at the beginning of the season, check every weekend.

Before it hits the track in 2013, I will be replacing hubs and bearings at all four corners just to be safe.

Questions:

- What brands of hubs / bearings, if any, are out there for racing purposes?
- What would a reasonable maintenance schedule be?

Tracks I will be running in 2012 include Mid Ohio multiple times, Grattan, maybe a trip to Nelson.

Thanks.

Reach out to Larry Funk as he runs one of these critters. He knows all about them.

I don't have contact info....Jay Lutz can help you out with that.

I don't have any kind of a hard schedule with those pieces, but just thoroughly inspect them before and during each event for any excessive noise, vibration, or looseness. In the trailer I carry a complete set of front knuckles with new bearings, hubs, and ARP studs, and a new rear hub/bearing assembly (also with new ARP studs). That way I'm pretty covered to quickly fix an issue I might have with any of those parts.

I do know that the CRX's do seem to be a bit harder on their front hubs and bearings though, so maybe someone like Larry will have some better insight for you.

Don't know what the typical solution is for the honda CRX.

But the Ford Fiesta front hubs are to weak to use. The front bearngs are no good either. I replaced the hub and bearing with parts from a ford Temp/Escort, then had to use the Tempo/Escort CV joint and custom axle shafts to connect the inner fiesta CV to the new outer CV. The spindle was modified to fit the new bearing.

The old hubs were to thin where the axle shaft went thru. The new ones are much better.

You might be able to find a source of billet hubs made from better material, but if designed like the fiesta hubs, they could still be weak.

Look around at cars that are a little heavier than yours and see what the hubs and bearings look like.

Also ask everyone you can find running your car, maybe it's not a problem, or someone else has already found a good solution.

Kevin, when I ran my SSB CRX, I carried a spare set of knuckles that were ready to go also. Curious - do you do any preventive replacement on your Integra or just wait until they start to feel loose?

No, I don't really ever replace stuff because "it's just time to". I'm just very methodical on checking the "worry" parts on a Honda. Constantly check the hubs, bearings, brakes, and axles for any sings of the part starting to give up. And if you're still using an OEM distributor, carry a spare one of those with a new ignitor and coil in it, because those too are a "when" and not an "if" of when they're gonna crap out on you.
