BLMC Spridget Brake Callipers Repair Methods

I have a question about servicing Spridget Brake calipers. The shop manuals state that the calipers are not to be "SPLIT" into two parts to replace the piston seals and retaining rings. I have talked to a long time retired service manager for a BLMC shop that told me it was OK to " separate" the calipers as long as the O" ring was replaced. Any opinions from the forum on this repair? Thanks, Jerry

Yep, it's fine to split the halves. I have done it many times.

Just use a new square seal but first rub a flat stone or fine file over both clamping surfaces.....to check for and eliminate potential burrs.

Yes- It's easier to separate the caliper halves for cleaning and such - like using fine emery cloth to smooth the bores and to get the crud out of the seal areas.
The seals for the fluid passage are readily available. Clean and dress the surfaces and do the same for the bolts and tighten/torque them well (don't remember the torque value...) Joel

Use air to blow the pistons out of the housings against a thin piece of wood before you separate the halves. Much easier all the way around. Install the pistons (stainless steel from Moss) and seals before you put the halves back together... with the new seal between the two...
