Glad the CRB withdrew the Tow Hook/Eyes letter.

Do you think they got tired of reading all of the letters from us non SM racers?

I think they just listened to reason.
Seems like a normal, expected reaction.

I'm still converting mine to the straps.

When I use the factory tow hooks, I either walk by my car and trash my shins, or leave them off entirely and have no way to get pulled home.

I don't understand how you can have a metal hook that works, and a strap that would not work when attached to the exact same point.

Straps would have to be SFI approved, carry a tag, and be replaced every 2 years. Precedent has been set!

Might require standard configuration sketch in GCR, and possible simulation testing by an independent engineering lab; results inconsequential!

Tim,

I know it plays well to some of the folks on this site, but I can't figure out why you're blaming this withdrawn rule on SM drivers? Seems like you're convicting the wrong group to me... A group that this would have zero effect on... EIL5

Sam, it is my understanding, that the person who wrote the request, didn't like the protruding tow hooks/eyes, because they cause damage when bump drafting.

And since he is a SM driver, and since that class does a ton of bump drafting, I assumed 2 + 2 = 4.

I'm not blaming the withdrawal of the rule on the SM drivers, but every other IT, Production, and GT car that would've had to had all of our tow hooks/eyes redone, just because 1 class of car wanted to change the entire GCR to allow bump drafting w/o any damage.

Sorry if my post came across as bashing SM's. That was not my intention, but that rule was the tail wagging the dog, IMHO.

This is frustrating for me as the intention is misunderstood, and you're not the only person "blaming" SM or bump drafting...

the rule request was submitted by tom lamb...

Todd lamb is an accomplished SM driver, but tom lamb (my understanding) drives a front wheel drive hatch (perhaps similar to your car) in a class that is not SM... SM's have well recessed hooks and have no need for this rule.

I believe there is support for this rule (with better real world wording), and none of the support has to do with bump drafting... I wonder if those letters will start to show up now... I can see how it wouldn't take many busted rear bumpers to make you wish those running into the back of you had non protruding steel bar stock sticking out of their body work...

The three main reasons I'm aware of:
body/bumper damage when hit from behind even if the contact is not that hard.
reduce the chance of being looped out when hit from behind due to hooking or grabbing.
safety as some small cars have their drivers close to door skins and some of the hooks being ran could easily reach them...
and perhaps busted shins for some...

I dont get why anyone would have resistance to this rule at all.

Why would anyone want to be on track with anyone else with anything protruding forward or rearward from the bumper(s) of their race car?

For all these excellent reasons:

I honestly have never read the tow hook rules in great detail as mine have always been contained inside the bumper outline of the body.
I'm amazed that having all tow hooks contained inside the outline of the car isnt a rule already and has not been for all time.

Seems crazy for them to have allowed any car to have anything protruding outside of the bumper outlines,,, like Deathrace car crazy.

Same here...

No, I don't intend to bump draft people in my Prod car so there's no worry of me intentionally harpooning you. But I also don't want to have my car gashed to pieces from minor incidental contact or do the same to someone else. This crap is expensive enough without having to repair holes punched in my car.
