I hate for fan this fire, but on our tech call in August for the Runoffs it was brought up and discussed about safety checking all cars that come through impound. And before you give me credit, I didn't say one word during the entire discussion. One thing mentioned was that items found should be handled by logbook notations and not written up as penalties.

As I said, I removed myself from the forum discussion since it seemed to be getting confrontational. I have made several recommendations over the years for items in the prod section of the GCR, but never any in section 9 of the general rules.

See you at VIR.

I took a really close look at a Miata yesterday after this has continued and no way no how is the clutch or flywheel in line with the drivers feet or compartment fyi. I suppose there are many that are though.

Right and many others are the same. Just use "common sense" or ask your wife or mother to look to see if they think you need it. If they say no, then chances are you don't.

Aside from the discussion of what is legal and not legal, I have seen on two occasions a chunk of flywheel thrown through a .200 thick cast aluminum bellhousing and then completely through a thin unibody floor structure. Even after all that one was imbedded in a fabricated aluminum scatter shield and the other repelled by a military surplus flak blanket. Seems like the modern cars would be designed with this in mind but if you increase the rev limit 2000rpms you add a lot of energy so who knows for sure? I like my feet.

Jim, I think the pushback is just a timing thing. Yes, enforcing a rule that has gone largely ignored is going to be I'll received, even if said enforcement is in the drivers best interest. I wouldn't want your job, and am thankful that you are willing to do it, this despite the one or two times we have not seen eye to eye. See you in the shed!
