I have belts that are dated May 2013. If I go through annual tech in April, are belts good for the year until the next annual? Jim Creighton, are you out there?

Thanks.

GCR 9.E.1 on page 72 of the Jan GCR

Restraint systems meeting SFI 16.1 or 16.5 shall bear a dated SFI Spec label. The certification
indicated by this label shall expire on December 31st of the 5th year after the date of manufacture
as indicated by the label.

So, in your case, date of manufacture is 2013, so those belts expire on Dec 31, 2018

Normally on the annual "sticker" there is a line for the year of when the belts expire

I've just seen new belts with a expiration date printed on them. Check your new belts before you buy them. Much better deal when it has just the manufacturer date on it. They still have the year made plus 5 rule. If they have a expiration date, then that's the date they are void for use.

FIA belts have the expiration date. I haven't seen any SFI belts with the expiration date.

Guys, I always hope you verify information posted here. Here is what a simple goggle search found concerning SFI belts.

Seat Belt Expiry Dates

Laurie Callender 05/09/2017 General Safety, Seatbelts

Recently SFI changed the labelling on their seat belts to show an expiry date and not a date of manufacture. This brings their labelling in line with FIA approved belts which also have an expiry date. For SFI belts the expiry is 2 years and they do this because of the deterioration of the nylon webbing as noted below.
The rate at which the breaking strength of the webbing decreases with outdoor exposure is illustrated in the graph below. The webbing used in motorsports restraints is typically made with DuPont Nylon 6-6 or a similar product. According to the data, the webbing loses about half of its strength in one year.

Also-posted on champ car site.

This actually shows a sample of the new label.

So, as I said, check to see what the belts say before you buy them.

P.S. Some states also mandate a maximum such as New Jersey.

My understanding is SFI says 2 years, when our rules went back to 5 years they changed the labels to expire date of 2 years. I only buy FIA belts now which are 5 year expiration date.

Joe is correct. And the FIA belts do cost a little more but they have a 2.5 longer use so calculate that when you buy your new belts. Those belts will save your life. Mine did.

Well I did say I hadn't seen any SFI belts with expiration date. But then most of my customers buy FIA only.
