Anyone know of a brand of car cameras that don't have 25 functions, remote from 5 locations and will follow you home on it's own after a race? I'm looking for simple on and off with a simple remote if possible. After putting up with the GoPro for years I'm really looking for a camera that's not smarter than I am. Thanks!

Bob

We use this in my wife's Spec Miata: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/164723

Once its set up you flip one switch to turn it on and it starts recording, same to end. And if you use the Gramin software you get some low grade (4hz I think) GPS data for free. Can also be operated/view playback via smartphone.

Garmin Virb Ultra 30, it has a rotating bezel around the "start/stop" button that when you rotate it forward it turn on the unit and starts recording and that bezel has a bump on it that makes it easy to operate with gloves on. It also has built in accelerometers and 10Hz GPS that you can do overlays with their easy to use software, you don't have to monkey around with trying to line things up from different sources. Also, the image stabilization is really good. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/522869

Now if you want to make it more complicated they will sell you watches for remotes or you can use the smartphone app. You can even treat it a little like a smart-speaker and say "Hey Garmin, start recording" or many other voice commands, but I don't imagine that would work well in a loud race car. I found a decent free video editor called VSDC that will allow you to do overlays and all sorts of cool stuff with the audio, but it sounded like you wanted the simple version. Here is a sample video of that https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfb0DcEsrMY

Edit: Jason was typing faster than me, the main differences between: Virb X is 1080P and I remember it being a 1Hz GPS, the Virb Ultra 30 goes to 4K and has a 10Hz GPS.

What I wanted was exactly what you wrote. On switch, record video, off switch.
I was going to suggest the Replay XD.
I have one thats very simple on / off.
Simple very sturdy aluminum body, takes pretty good video and simple enough for my old ass to operate.

I even have it set up on a 12v hardwire they offer to a breaker that when it sees 12v it starts recording and when I shut off the breaker it stops, but it seems they may have been bought by some larger company.

Mine is an older version of this:

I'd recommend one if they are still in business. I may just buy another one as a spare because like you, I dont need a million functions out of my video cam, just on, record, off stop.

EDIT, well it looks like they have been bought or are otherwise restructuring.
Nice looking used kit on Ebay.

You can set any GoPro to auto-start on power-up, even the old ones. All mine are set that way.

We're replacing the older ones with GoPro 7s (going down in price since the 8s came out), as it incorporates internal GPS. RaceRender recognizes the GPS data and will even do a track map drawing and show speed, etc in the videos.

I run an old Ion (maybe 5 years back...) that has a simple large sliding button that turns it on and starts recording. Easy to operate with gloves. Also does the wifi connect to a phone thing for remote control, but I never use that. What I like about it is that it records the whole thing as one file.

For rear facing I'm using a GoPro Session. Also simple one button operation, but it cuts the video into 12m segments that then have to be stitched back together with editing software.

It looks like Ion is still out there: https://usa.ioncamera.com/action-cameras/

I bought one of these from eBay. It takes reasonable video, battery life is about 1 hour. Doesn't make such huge files as a GoPro.

File size and existence of multiple files are the result of your camera settings.

If you want smaller file sizes, reduce the quality of your default movie settings (which is 4K in later versions of GoPro) to either 1080p or 720p. Or even 480p if you don't really need/want high definition.

The maximum file size for the FAT32 file system is 4GB*, so that's why GoPro "chapters" at that size. So if you want to reduce the number of files that GoPro creates, reduce the quality of your default movie settings.

The capability is all in there.

*exFAT can have much larger files sizes. However, even if the card is formatted to exFAT, GoPro will still "chapter" at 4GB so that you can copy the files to a laptop or PC hard drive that only supports 4GB files.

As an aside for those of you who use Race Technology equipment - and those who don't -

Race Technology has a "file stitcher" utility that can join the separate GoPro files into one. This is available with either the "Video Import License" that allows bringing GoPro (or practically any other) video into our Analysis software alongside DL1 data, or the new "GoPro Only" license that allows GoPro video and data (from a GPS GoPro) to be opened in a special version of Analysis.

The "GoPro Only" license is a great way to put a toe in the water with race data, it works off of JUST the GPS and accelerometer data present in the video file from a newish GoPro that has GPS.

I can send info to anyone interested, or see our website at:
