Helping a friend with his race car and with the drysump pump in place it leaves not much room for an alternator. It is a carbed engine running on electromotive hpv1. Curious what you guys think for race length he can get out of an Optima battery?

I ran a Yellow Optima and Electromotive HPV 1 without alternator in my HP Sprite. Never had a problem with lack of charge. Used a Battery Tender charger between races with a plug in lead to the battery. Battery also ran a gear reduction starter, Holly fuel pump, etc. Also left the Tender on when car was in storage.

Run our Sprites on a standard 60 series battery with removable covers. Run XDI, Carter pump, AMB, low geared starter, no problem. Ran 20 and 30 minute races on one charge once when charge cart blew up. Have a small solar panel on the trailer for storage and recharge between races. Solar panel was nice to have after the hurricane during the 3 weeks of no power.

Reason we don't run the Optimas is all the problems everyone else seems to be having with them. 30 years of no charging system with no problems.

No alternator on my Sprite either and I use a VERY small, lightweight (14 lbs), 24 AmpHour battery. I use an Electromotive XDi, twin fuel pumps and electronic gauges.
