So I have raced IT cars for 20 something years, volvo and a ITS 280z, but one of my life goals is to build my own production car, and at least participate in the runoffs.

I have a ton of z car stuff, but an EP 240z seems like a lot of work, and I despise carburetors.. I don't think the 280 would work because of the tiny throttle body..

I really love fabricating and building things, and going my own way, so something off the wall has appeal. ( but nothing too crazy )

I would love an open top no windshield car

I hate blowing up engines.

I have been thinking of the following

Z3- open top, competitive, has the straight 6 sound I love

NC miata - open top, easy button, but not as common as a NB

ND miata - open top, beautiful, very well designed car, just drove one at a track day last week and what a great car. competitive ? any built one yet ?

everybody chime in with thoughts and opinions..

Thanks
Chris Plucker

I've got an FP Saturn I'll sell you. Doesn't check the open roof, but definitely off the wall and requires lots of self-engineering...

Chris, there's a ton of options. Call me if you'd like to discuss any of the options you've listed as I've raced/built each one of those.
Easy to find me at jesseprathermotorsports.com

Z3 sounds like the way to go to me. It would be great to have you running a prod car

If I wanna go EP in a roadster:
S2000
Z3
Caterham

All proven competitive and reliable, and all pretty different at how they do things. I absolutely would've listed the NB Miata as well, but I'm just not a fan of the "sorta full-prep but kinda limited-prep" ruleset that's tied to it.

A ND Miata would be groundbreaking, as no one has done one yet, and yes it would be a real nice looking car both in person and on paper. Would be cool, at least you know, for a Miata...

Z3 covers the check box for a topless car. Good motor, solid chassis, good engineering behind the scenes, parts are easy to find and will be for a very long time.

I love me some S2000, but engines are getting pretty pricey now, that Honda has quit selling many of the replacement parts for them. I would build one of these if I wasn't a masochist and wanted to race a FWD. They can make solid power and the chassis is Brilliant to start with going with race suspension makes it even better.

Miata, well I guess another one won't be the end of the world. ND would be interesting to see how that car could be competitive and what its true potential could be. However, don't you dare show up with the Brembo Brake package, cuz thats not fair. Can't have things like modern brakes screwing up the old pecking order.

BRZ/FRS, not topless, but a solid contender with a lot of potential. Modern tech as well, so no carbs, solid rotors, stupid drums, etc.

E46 convertible? Another BMW option. Heavy car though. Convertible V6 Camaro or Mulletstang?

Boxster? Solid car, engine issues that may have to be developed around. Mid Engined so it will make even the scary MR2 seem like yet another Miata. Lots of aftermarket support for the Boxster platform. Again, don't be bringing them big old Brembos, "cuz real race cars have drums by damn".

My Z3 was great for me, Chris Dryden and now Jesse Prather. Only one DNF in 6 years for me with the 6 cylinder, one National Points Championship, lots of wins, podiums. Not many secrets that you can't buy. Also really likes the new Hoosier Radial. My choice for a dependable winner.
