My physical of two weeks ago revealed an abnormality in my heart...tomorrow I am getting triple bypass surgery. I have come to these inescapable conclusions: get a good physical, just because you bicycle, ski and all that other stuff doesn’t mean you’re healthy and secondly- if it wasn’t for the physical exam requirement this would’ve gotten blown off thus - racing can save your life.
Happy Holidays to all.
And if this all goes horribly wrong tomorrow- I have no regrets, and Gary L will post all my racing junk for sale.

Thats some heavy news.

I wish you all the best and a speedy recovery. I agree. After some unfortunate events with my brother, I take my physical a lot more seriously than I ever did. Early detection is a big deal for almost anything major.

Eric, hooray for you and hope that you recover just fine. And thanks to the medical advances that made your problem detectable -and treatable !! The next time somebody blabs about "the ancient Chinese knowing all and better than our modern medicine..." ask them this: "So how did the ancient Chinese do heart bypasses" - or knee replacements, or ...?
Related to this, about 10 years ago I had hurt my shoulder - just wrenched it somehow- and went to the orthopedic to have it X-rayed. The shoulder problem was easily fixed later ("frozen shoulder") but the X-rays also revealed "very many problems in your neck. I hope you don't have any dangerous hobbies, because you are very much at risk." We got a second opinion by Dr. Terry Tramel in Indianapolis - same concern. Don't race, drive go-carts, ride rollercoasters, etc..
This led to me having to quit racing. But hey - 10 years later I'm alive! I actually had the neck repaired this June, but I'm not going to risk racing again. Joel

Eric:

I am glad the surgery went well. Now don't overdo the recovery regimen! Follow the rules, and we'll see you out on the track again soon.

Rick

After losing my cousin and a 30 year friend and SCCA racer and his wife recently it certainly is great to see a survival story. Here's hoping it all works and you are back in the seat soon.

Bob

Glad you caught it at the physical and that your surgery went well. Wishing for speedy recovery and back on track as soon as the Dr says you're clear!

Guys, one of the best scans you can get is a calcium scan of your heart. They are about $100 and for whatever reason insurance does not cover it. The scan will give you a good idea about the health of the arteries in you heart. Money well spent.
