Hello to all,

I run vintage in (God Bless) Chris Fox's old Sprite. I recently developed a problem when going from gear 4 to gear 3 at the end of straights. I do not use the engine as a break, but simply, stand on the breaks, change gears and continue. (with a good "blip" of the throttle at the correct time". My engine is less built than LP and I was using a stock PP and a competition disc with shims behind the pp. This started at my last event and the engine is now out of the car. What I found, was a pressure plate that looked like it had gotten hot all the way around and had several very fine cracks in the contact surface. No noticeable slipping while driving. I believe the bearing type throwout bearing was making some noise also at the last event. The trans is a close ratio with straight cut gears. I have since bought a new stock pp and also STOCK disc. New throwout bearing is solid(non bearing type) Question is, do you think I am on the right track, especially if I also have the trans looked at. (thru the inspection cover.) I am hoping to hear that my disc was worn enough to warrant thinner shims behind the flywheel, which caused minor slipping , heat and the crunch. Hope this makes sense and thanks for any suggestions. Pete Carroll

It has straight cut gears, but is it synchro or dog engagement? If it's a synchro box, I'd vote on a 3rd gear synchro almost gone..

I go with syncro rings too.

Parts cheap compared to time necessary to install.

I had the exact same problem this summer with the sccr box in my sprite. It was a worn 3rd gear synchro.
